BIOGRAPHY - JASON MISURKA

I am a Canadian abstract contemporary artist, born in 1967 in Toronto, Ontario, and currently based in Mississauga. My home studio overlooks a quiet, tree-lined landscape that often informs the rhythm and atmosphere of my work.

My artistic journey began at the age of eight, rooted in a fascination with sketching animals and landscapes. This early curiosity evolved into formal training at Sheridan College, where I studied in the Fundamentals of Art program. There, I explored a wide range of disciplines including photography, printmaking, life drawing, and art theory, before continuing into Classical Animation, developing a strong foundation in visual perception, sequential drawing, and composition.

Over time, I found my strongest connection through abstract painting—a medium that allows me to translate emotion, movement, and intuition into visual form. My process often begins with spontaneous sketches that evolve into layered compositions, built through translucent colour, gestural mark-making, and a focus on balance and flow.

My work has been recognized through participation in the Ontario Society of Artists 2024 Open Juried Exhibition, where it was selected among a highly competitive field of over 700 submissions, with only a small number of paintings included. This experience marked an important milestone in my evolving practice and growing presence within the contemporary abstract art community.

Drawing from everyday observation, my work explores the tension and harmony between energy and stillness, inviting a contemplative and immersive viewing experience.

  ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings are intuitive explorations of the subconscious, capturing dreamlike states and moments suspended between time and space. Through layered compositions of translucent and saturated colour, I build visual environments that evoke energy, movement, and a sense of quiet joy.

Each work begins with observation—often through photography or hand-drawn sketches—collecting fragments of lived experience that are later transformed in the studio. Influenced by urban walks through Toronto, travels across Europe and the Caribbean, and time spent in nature, I draw from a range of environments to explore organic forms, florals, and the shifting rhythms of landscape.

My process combines airbrushed acrylics to create atmosphere and fluid transitions with gestural brushwork that introduces movement and immediacy. At times incorporate free-flowing inks that guide the paint organically, allowing spontaneous forms to emerge, while masking and transferred elements create tension between control and chance. Final layers, including acrylic marker details and splatter, bring texture and vibrancy to the surface.

Balancing intention with spontaneity, my work explores the space between structure and freedom—inviting viewers into a contemplative experience shaped by motion, memory, and abstraction.
