About the Artist
JASON MISURKA
"My name is Jason Misurka , an emerging Canadian abstract contemporary artist born 1967 Toronto Ontario.
I now live in Mississauga , where I paint in my home studio, overlooking an inspiring backyard view.
My artistic journey began at the age of eight, when I first started
sketching animals and landscapes. This early passion continued through high school and into college, where it evolved into a more formal pursuit.
I studied Fundamentals of Art, which was a one year program at Sheridan College, where I explored foundational techniques across various mediums, including photography, printmaking, life drawing, and art theory. I later specialized in the Classical Animation program, focusing on visual perception, sequential drawing, and background and layout design.
Over time, I discovered a deeper connection with abstract painting. This medium allowed me to fully embrace my imagination—building on initial sketches with bold colour palettes inspired by everyday life and personal observation.
Active Member of Headwaters Arts Gallery and Mississauga Arts Council.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings intuitively engage the subconscious mind, capturing dreamlike states and moments frozen in time and space. This is achieved through the layering of translucent and bold colour palettes, transferred images, and masking film—creating compositions that evoke energy, movement, and joy.
Each painting is an expression and interpretation of my personal life experiences, informed by keen observation. I gather inspiration from photo captures and hand-drawn sketches of imagined scenes, which are then manipulated to shape and form my compositions.
My focus is often inspired by long walks through the urban streetscapes of downtown Toronto, travels through Europe and the Caribbean, and casual hikes along nature trails, such as those winding through Gravenhurst, Ontario. These adventures allow me to explore a wide range of interests, including the beauty of nature, florals, and the rich colours and landscapes the world offers.
My techniques include airbrushing with richly pigmented acrylic tones, painting in sweeping motions across wide surfaces, as well as detailing in smaller areas. I also work with gestural brushstrokes—both long and short—and incorporate free-flow inks that move spontaneously, unfolding into raw, organic forms. Final touches often include acrylic markers for fine details and flick brushes for splatter effects.
