About the Artist
JASON MISURKA
I’m Jason Misurka, an emerging Canadian abstract contemporary artist, born in 1967 in Toronto, Ontario. I currently live and work in Mississauga, where my home studio overlooks a peaceful, tree-lined backyard that often inspires my creative process.
My artistic journey began at the age of eight, sketching animals and landscapes—a passion that grew throughout my youth and eventually led me to formal studies at Sheridan College. There, I completed the Fundamentals of Art program, exploring media such as photography, printmaking, life drawing, and art theory. I later specialized in Classical Animation, focusing on visual perception, sequential drawing, and background and layout design.
Over time, I discovered a deep connection with abstract painting. This medium allows me to translate imagination, emotion, and movement into visual form. My works often begin with intuitive sketches and develop into layered compositions filled with bold colours, gestural brushwork, and rhythmic balance. I draw inspiration from everyday life and observation, aiming to capture moments of harmony between energy and stillness.
Active Member of Headwaters Arts Gallery and Mississauga Arts Council.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings intuitively engage the subconscious, capturing dreamlike states and moments suspended in time and space. I achieve this through the layering of translucent and bold colour palettes, transferred imagery, and masking film—building dynamic compositions that evoke energy, movement, and joy.
Each work is an expression and interpretation of personal life experiences, inspired by careful observation. These impressions often begin with photo captures or hand-drawn sketches—imaginative fragments that are reshaped into fluid compositions. My subjects are influenced by a variety of places and moments: long walks through the urban streetscapes of downtown Toronto, travels through Europe and the Caribbean, and quiet nature hikes along the winding trails of Gravenhurst, Ontario. These experiences inform my exploration of nature’s wonders, florals, and the vivid colours found in diverse landscapes.
My techniques include airbrushing with richly pigmented acrylic tones to create sweeping motions and atmospheric depth, along with hand-painted elements using long and short gestural brushstrokes. I incorporate free-flowing inks to guide paint organically across the surface, allowing spontaneous forms to emerge. Final details are often added with acrylic markers and flick-brush splatter effects, giving each piece a vibrant, textural finish.
